Description
Jacqueline H. Wolf is Professor Emeritus at Ohio University. She received her PhD in U.S. History from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Wolf taught for 24 years at the OU Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine as a member of the Department of Social Medicine, where she served as department chair from 2009 through 2014. She also held adjunct positions in the Ohio University’s Departments of History, Women and Gender Studies, and Health Communications. Wolf is a historian of medicine with expertise in the history of public health, the history of women’s health and medicine, the history of children’s health and medicine, and the history of biomedical ethics. Her research focuses on the history of birth and breastfeeding practices in the United States. She is the author of dozens of articles and book chapters as well as three books: Don’t Kill Your Baby: Public Health and the Decline of Breastfeeding in the 19th and 20th Centuries (Ohio State University Press, 2001); Deliver Me from Pain: Anesthesia and Birth in America (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2009); and Cesarean Section: An American History of Risk, Technology, and Consequence (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2018). From 2018 to 2025, WOUB Public Radio produced Wolf’s podcast, Lifespan: Stories of Illness, Accident, and Recovery, with Wolf serving as host and executive producer. In 2025, the American Association for the History of Medicine awarded Wolf their highest honor—the Genevieve Miller Lifetime Achievement Award
